Conflict between retailers and producers in Romania

The large hypermarkets have launched an offensive against Romanian companies that fail to pay their suppliers within 90 days, the maximum period stipulated by Law 321/2009 on the marketing of foodstuffs being 30 days.

Farmers have also announced their intention of organising demonstrations in protest at the refusal of the large supermarket chains to pay producers and processors a fair price as required by law.

Instead they are forcing down the price of dairy products, refusing to buy from processors who refuse to go along with this. In the meantime, retail prices are steadily rising.

In view of this, what instruments does the Commission have at its disposal to remedy matters and ensure that the Romanian authorities establish a fair and responsible balance between the interests of retailers and producers in Romania?
