Crisis affecting paper and cellulose production in Romania

Great concern is being expressed in business circles regarding paper and cellulose production in Romania. Since 2008, cellulose production in Romania has been non-existent, while enormous quantities of wood for the production thereof are being exported. Most paper manufacturing plants have also closed down and those remaining are required to import all the cellulose they need. Paper and cellulose production is not causing the destruction of forests and is, on the contrary, improving the quality and sustainable development thereof (enjoying an unprecedented surge in Finland and Sweden, for example, where the quantity of wood per hectare has actually increased).

In view of this:

What measures would the Commission recommend to support paper and cellulose production and other similar activities with access to local raw materials and individuals with experience in the field?

What recommendations is the Commission making to Romanian ministry officials for measures to support paper and cellulose production?
