Increasingly less milk being delivered to dairies

This year, the volume of milk collected from farms and taken to dairies has decreased by 7.8% in the first half of the year compared with the same period last year. The volume of unprocessed milk imported in the first half of the year has also fallen over the same period the previous year.

The drop in milk collections by dairy processors has also led to a fall in the output of dairy products, both in the case of drinking milk and of buttermilk and cream.

Bearing in mind the drought this year, one can expect the figures for the third quarter of the year to be even more striking.

What steps does the Commission think ought to be taken to facilitate an increase in milk deliveries to dairies so as to ensure there are no losses to dairy farmers or consumers, or to dairy processors?
