Romania has the sixth largest utilised agricultural area of all the EU Member States. However, a variety of factors mean that it has a low agricultural output.

60% of the agricultural area of that country is arable land, around two thirds of which is geared to cereal crop production. Unfortunately, while a large proportion of the agricultural area is made over to cereal crops, their output value only amounts to 25% of the overall agricultural output.

This represents far too little added value — EUR 600 euro/hectare in Romania, as opposed to EUR 1 000/hectare in Western Europe.

What tools does the Commission have at its disposal to support Member States in which the level of agricultural output is a problem?
