Milk is one of the most complex foods, offering benefits for both the skeletal system and the brain. However, milk consumption in Romania is 4.4 times lower than average consumption in Western Europe and 2.4 times lower than the average for Eastern Europe. Even though a range of programmes have been set up at national level to encourage milk consumption, the number of people consuming milk is in decline. Low milk consumption affects the health of the country’s population and therefore also represents an economic problem. The fall in consumption affects both milk obtained from small-scale producers and pasteurised milk.

In the Commission’s view, what action might be taken to boost the consumption of milk and milk products in Romania?
