The deregulation of the milk market has seen a sharp drop in the price of livestock, to the extent that a cow is now worth the same as a pair of shoes. Since livestock farmers are bent on reducing herd numbers, cows are being priced at RON 500, and this downward trend looks set to continue. Crops are being grubbed up and the animals do not have enough food. In the last two months, agricultural production has been seriously affected by drought, with losses estimated at EUR 2 billion. This has also affected the bovine population, the restoration of which will be a lengthy process and take over five years.
