School absenteeism among Roma communities

In Romania, 44% of Roma children between 7 and 11 years old do not attend school, and this percentage rises to 65% in the case of Roma children between 12 and 16 years old. At the age of 6, the enrolment rate of Roma children in preschool education is five times lower than the national average. Financial problems are the main cause for school abandonment, as in most cases these children come from poor and uneducated families.

Taking into account the above:

What are the measures that the Commission can take with a view to the combating of school absenteeism in Romania and in all Member States?

What are the European programmes that the Member States can access in order to support the increase of the literacy level in the EU?
