Family farms generally provide food to small communities, and those that supply organic products on the market are particularly successful. Family farms producing and marketing organic food have a high chance of making profit at a time when these products are increasingly popular among people. Family farms also contribute to food security and to the eradication or at least the stagnation of poverty in small communities. Moreover, they also offer employment opportunities for areas where farming is the only possibility to generate income. In addition to the fact that these farms contribute in terms of food security and balanced diet to their communities, the methods they use are based on good practice and on a friendly relationship with the environment, including its protection, as well as on the preservation of local or traditional products from the area where they operate.

What measures does the Commission consider could be applied in order to encourage the development or the establishment of such farms in Romania and the European Union?
