The impact of drought on vegetable and fruit production

The drought during the summer months of this year had a major impact on vegetable and fruit production. The low production influenced food prices, leading to a 30% increase. In the vegetable and fruit sector, production was 25-30% lower compared to 2014. The most affected crops were potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers. As such, potato production was 40% lower than in 2014, and the price of Romanian potatoes grew by 50%, reaching RON 1.5. As regards fruit production, in addition to the fact that it was lower than in 2014, the quality of the fruit was also low, which led to difficulties in selling it.
